Our History

Established in 1907

Welcome to Hotel Planter, the crown jewel of La Conner, WA, and the town's only National Historical Inn. Nestled along the scenic Swinomish Channel, our hotel stands as a tribute to the rich heritage and pioneering spirit of the Pacific Northwest. As the new proprietors, Shannon and Stan O'Neil, we are honored to continue a legacy of hospitality that has been cherished by the community for over a century.

La Conner's story is intertwined with the fertile lands of the Skagit River Valley, which have long nurtured agriculture, commerce, and culture. Since its founding, our town has blossomed into a vibrant hub, attracting visitors with its charming streets, bustling waterfront, and artistic flair.

Hotel Planter’s history began in 1907 when it was constructed with robust concrete blocks on land purchased from Louisa A. Conner, the town’s namesake. Originally catering to affluent visitors from Seattle and local merchants, the hotel quickly became a cornerstone of La Conner's hospitality scene. It later transformed into a haven for artists and writers, who found inspiration within its storied halls.

Like many historic landmarks, Hotel Planter has faced challenges over the years. The Great Depression hit hard, and by the 1980s, the hotel had fallen into disrepair, serving as transient housing. However, a new chapter began in 1989 with a significant renovation that transformed the upper floor. The original 22 rooms were reimagined into 12 beautifully appointed spaces, blending modern amenities with the building's historic charm.

As we step into our roles as custodians of Hotel Planter, our vision is to celebrate and enhance its unique character. We plan to personalize each room with antique furnishings and distinctive designs, each reflecting a different historical era. Eventually, each room will have its own name, embodying its unique style and story.

We are also excited to introduce O'Neil's Confectionary and Soda Fountain, located in the space formerly occupied by Earthenworks Gallery. This nostalgic venue will offer sweet treats and refreshing beverages, creating a delightful experience for our guests.

During your stay, we invite you to explore the treasures of La Conner. Wander through its art galleries, browse its quaint shops, and indulge in its diverse dining options.
